Excerpts

The basic value of the event-driven company is to change the very nature of information from passive cargo that arrives….to an active enzyme that circulates throughout an ecosphere in which all points are instantly accessible from all other points.

The goal in integrating manufacturing processes is to crosslink every process, application, data source, and subcell within the organization so each can communicate, "teach," and "learn" from one another in real time and give the customers "available to promise" instantly….In today's business environment, active information is the basic ingredient of value creation.

To manage the delivery of information, the event-driven company first designs subscription lists of news events from inside and outside the company to which each worker may subscribe for real-time updates. This copious flow is managed by sophisticated filters, which make sure that what gets to the subscriber is precisely what's needed, presented in the right order, and delivered with as much refined analysis and possible.

Management by exception attempts to expand upon the "80/20 rule" that many of us see on a daily basis. This rule states that 80 percent of the value of most tasks is achieved in the first 20 percent of the efforts. Conversely, the last 20 percent of value ends up taking the lion's share of the effort (or 80 percent)… The event driven goal is more extreme. Devote 100 percent of the company's human resources to exceptions, 0 percent to routine…The focus now becomes twofold: achieving best efficiency from routine efforts through automation, while enabling maximum business leverage to be gained from the exceptional events. Everyone becomes focused on creating new opportunities, rather that optimizing the known ones.
